defence infrastructure organisation (DIO) consultancy

Delivered a technical service secondment operating across the UK military estate, partnering on delivery of strategic historic environment performance goals and exchange of skills and information.

Scope covered assets in operational military use or under consideration for disposal:

  • Conservation Appraisal and Action Plan for works to the 19th century Chatham Lines agreed with English Heritage. Structures formed part of the former Naval dockyard at Chatham defensive system.

  • Archaeological and cultural heritage input for Fort George Integrated Rural Management Plan, addressing dual functions as an operational military base and visitor attraction, agreed in consultation with Historic Scotland and others.

  • Conservation Statement for Royal Haslar Hospital, Gosport. Built in the mid-18th century as a hospital dedicated to the Navy, it closed in 2009. The Conservation Statement guided decisions on the site’s future and was a significant contribution to an ‘Enquiry by Design’ event.

  • Detailed survey of a dilapidated temple or summer house in the Italian Garden at Halton House, Buckinghamshire. Both the temple and its associated garden features were recorded in detail, providing an archive that could be used to create templates during future repair of specific design features.
