A multi-disciplinary heritage, architecture and landscape design team prepared an indicative masterplan and urban design code for the re-development of a historic cavalry barracks founded in the 18th century.

The property was part of the DIO strategic estate disposal programme. Extensive engagement was undertaken with Historic England and LBH Conservation Officer during collaborative development of supplementary planning documents.

Aim was to find viable uses for all listed buildings and buildings of historic significance as part of an overall strategy to allow a meaningful design interpretation of the historic use, whilst ensuring that the development became a connected part of the wider area and supported strategic regeneration objectives for the borough.

A detailed heritage audit informed specific heritage design parameters that protected and enhanced the unique character and significance of the formal 18th century barracks complex. The audit highlighted how the historic architecture was shaped in part by events at the Barracks that led to legislative and policy changes for improved welfare provision for military personnel.
